Hello everybody.

I am in the process of planning a herping excursion for next spring to Southeastern Arizona near the Mexico and New Mexico borders. I have been doing a lot of research lately trying to pick the best spot for some semi-exotic herping that won't break the bank and will afford me plenty of opportunity to find and photograph species I have never seen. It looks like a trip to Cochise and Santa Cruz counties is just what the doctor ordered.

I have compiled a list below of snake species that occur in either Santa Cruz County, Cochise County, or both. This is just the snakes, the rest of the herps list is too exhaustive. You can also see below a map of AZ showing where those counties are geographically. My plan is to take a Southwest flight to Tuscon, rent a vehicle, and drive down. It's not too far if you go from Tuscon.

I would like to hear input and suggestions from members here, especially those that have any experience in these areas. I would also like to see if anyone is interested in joining in on this so I do not end up going by myself. I want to go in spring and am looking for input on what would be the best time frame to get the highest amount of activity.

Anyone care to discuss. This list is awesome, it's like looking at the Christmas catalogs as a kid. Finding just a few of these would make it a huge success for me. And, there are TEN HOTS on this list including (in my opinion) some of the most beautiful rattlesnakes and a Coral.

Arizona elegans - Glossy Snake
Coluber bilineatus - Sonoran Whipsnake
Coluber flagellum cingulum - Sonoran Coachwhip
Gyalopion canum - Chihuahuan Hook-Nose Snake
Diadophis punctatus - Ringneck Snake
Heterodon kennerlyi - Mexican Hognose Snake
Lampropeltis getula nigrita - Western Black Kingsnake
Lampropeltis getula splendid - Desert Kingsnake
Lampropeltis pyromelana pyromelana - Arizona Mountain Kingsnake
Oxybelis aeneus - Brown Vinesnake
Pituophis catenifer affinis - Sonoran Gopher Snake
Rhinocheilus lecontei - Longnose Snake
Salvadora grahamiae - Eastern Patch-nosed Snake
Salvadora hexalepis deserticola - Big Bend Patch-nosed Snake
Senticolis triaspis - Green Rat Snake
Sonora semiannulata - Groundsnake
Tantilla hobartsmithi - Smith’s Black-headed Snake
Tantilla wilcoxi - Chihuahuan Black-headed Snake
Tantilla yaquia - Yaqui Black-headed Snake
Thamnophis cyrtopsis - Black-necked Garter Snake
Thamnophis eques - Mexican Garter Snake
Thamnophis marcianus - Checkered Garter Snake
Trimorphodon lambda - Sonoran Lyresnake
Leptotyphlops dissectus - New Mexico Threadsnake
Leptotyphlops humilis segregus - Trans Pecos Threadsnake
Hypsiglena sp. - Hooded Nightsnake
Micruroides euryxanthus - Sonoran Coral Snake
Crotalus atrox - Western Diamondback Rattlesnake
Crotalus lepidus - Rock Rattlesnake
Crotalus molossus - Black-tailed Rattlesnake
Crotalus pricei - Twin-spotted Rattlesnake
Crotalus scutulatus - Mojave Rattlesnake
Crotalus tigris - Tiger Rattlesnake
Crotalus willardi willardi - Arizona Ridge-Nosed Rattlesnake
Crotalus willardi obscures - New Mexico Ridge-Nosed Rattlesnake
Sistrurus catenatus - Massasauga

For some added visual stimulation, these pictures were all taken in Cochise or Santa Cruz Counties in Arizona.

If I can arrange it (depends on when you go), I'm in. I will confer with He Who Has Traveled Much In Those Parts and see what info I can glean for you.

Of course, if you go in the summer, all the folks who go to the ATS conference in Rio Rico could also go. lol

Spring would be awesomeeee.
I'm in 98 percent. I've learned not to go 100 percent on things. Haha
I'll probably be in LA by then, so I'll just grab a bus to Tuscon or something. I was actually planning on going to AZ for a bit anyways at some point next year.

I couldn't resist, I had to update with some example pics of specimens from those counties. It doesn't sound like extra convincing was needed but I have been drooling over these counties for the last week or so and thought I would share these.

Hey Des,

I would probably leave Thurs. night, spend Fri-Sat-Sun and part of Monday hunting and travel back to Cali Monday night. That's just a guess, I am in the very early stages of planning this but I really feel like I am going to do it.

I'm in. A friend of mine just got back from AZ and found tons of stuff. Including a coral.
ALL lifers for me. Keep us detailed and I'll plan accordingly because I'd hate to miss this. If we get enough people, we can even make it an official CRIS outing.

Camping, hotel, anything. I say we get there, herp all evening, all night, and all morning, then sleep during the heat of the day. Then do it all over again...and again...and again.
And John, way to get me all excited months in advance. You know how hard the next 6 or 7 months are gonna be? Haha

Now I'm gonna have to find somewhere to spend my winter where I can still find snakes. If I have to go all winter AND count the days 'til AZ, that's just gonna put me over the edge. Good think I'm gonna be in Mexico in December. At least I have a chance for something...

I am usually down for camping anytime but I agree with Mike about herping in the morning, evening and all night. If I am gonna sleep during the middle part of the day I am not sure I want to do it in a tent. Cheap motel may be the best option. I need to do some weather research to look at average temps in that area in the spring.

I'm sure we can get a Motel 6 room or something for pretty cheap, and I'm sure between 2 beds, and a good sized floor space we can fit quite a few people in one room. I have no problem sleeping on a floor. I'll get more info on weather and stuff too. we should find out what night time temps are as well, that way we can make sure we get good cruising nights, since everything will be on the crawl looking for mates. Theoretically.

Josh, it'll be great to have you along. The more the merrier.
The way it's looking now, my Costa Rica trip in January is off so I think I'm going to Arizona and or New Mexico a couple times during the spring.

Arizona and or New Mexico is afordable plus if we all go together it would be way cheap! Question: When you go to AZ or any other state do you have to buy another fishing licence? how does that work? And where can you get permits for exotics for transport...if I were to take anything?

Licenses you can usually get for 2 days at a time for like 12 bucks I think. That's what it was last year at least.
Not sure about permits for transport over state lines though.

A three-day, non-resident hunt license in AZ is $61.25. My understanding is this is the license you are legally required to have for our purposes. I will double check with the person I know who herps legally in that area on a regular basis.
